Samedi, Samedi, Samedi!
Several years ago, our friend Todd spent the majority of a trip cross-country working out the formula for the perfect monster truck rally advertisement with a friend. It’s really quite something to behold, replete with reverberations, explosions, and frequent assertions of “m-m-m-more than you can handle!“. In fact, the endlessly useful phrase “you’ll pay for the seat, but you’ll only need the edge!” has become firmly ensconced in the vernacular of the Jejune household.
Since moving here, though, I’ve wondered about how, and if, monster truck rally ads translate into foreign languages. Winter-friendly vehicles like Ski-Doos are interwoven into the history and culture of rural Québec, so could monster trucks have the same hold? More pressingly, would the TV ads begin with an echoey voiceover shouting “Dimanche, Dimanche, Dimanche!!“?
Well, not entirely. But I am so happy that after some patient searching I have finally, finally found out what a monster truck rally TV ad is like in French.
I must admit that the French commercial lacks certain appeal compared to Todd in a car inserting monster truck voice with triple laser blasts and a voice that goes lower with each repetition of “m-m-m-monster.”
