Mistake Rib Moebius

Materials: 2 skeins of Malabrigo Worsted (100% Merino Wool) in Amoroso from Supercrafty. Size 9 needles.

Time: Several weeks.

Cost: Just over $20.

Knitters everywhere swoon over the legendary Malabrigo yarn, which is surprisingly cheap and so soft that you want to compulsively rub it all over your face.  I’d never used it before, though, because its single-ply softness means that it also doesn’t wear well, and what’s the point of making a sweater or mittens if they begin to dissolve after a single wearing?

But I’ve been on a bit of a cowl kick, and I was able to pick up a couple of cheap skeins of Malabrigo when I was visiting my parents for Thanksgiving, and it made for a perfect vacation project — i.e. something super-easy, fast, and very gratifying.

I wanted this to be a double-loop cowl (or infinity scarf, or moebius, or snood, or circle scarf, or whatever the kids these days are calling it), so I upsized the needles significantly to give it some drape. (Knitters with a more normal gauge would probably go for size 10s.) I also wanted it to have a little bit of structure, however, so I settled on working a mistake rib pattern. I used a temporary cast on to CO 43 stitches, worked in mistake rib for about 54″, then flipped one of the ends once to make a moebius before I grafted the ends together. Easy-peasy.

You can wear it outside your coat!  You can wear it inside your coat!  You can wear it indoors!  You can wear it as a shoulder-warmer!  The only problem is that I want to make anotherrrr, and my scarf drawer already overfloweth.

Um, yeah. I may steal this idea for crochet. I have long been thinking of making a cowl or circle scarf or whatever the kids are calling it these days, but I haven’t done it, yet. Also, with our pending migration to a warmer climate, I keep putting it off because I think, “When will I ever get to wear it?” But your photos are much too tempting. I think I’ll go for it.
