Scarf #3

Long, skinny, and acrylic. And, curiously, maybe the best scarf so far.

Materials: Four skeins of Red Heart Soft acrylic (shut up). Metal size 10.5 needles.

Time: 6 or so hours.

Approximate Cost: $8 for the yarn.

The short story: I was at home, I was bored, and I had no access to any good yarn shops, so I went to Wal-Mart and bought a few balls of Red Heart Soft. (The "soft" bit makes a huge difference, I'm sure.) I wanted something non-stifling but functional to wear in our ineptly climate-controlled classrooms, so I opted for a long, skinny scarf made in 1x1 rib with two strands of yarn held together.

It's actually longer than this.

I never remember to count rows, so I eyeballed the stripes and they came out fine. And because it's only 13 or so rows across, it knit up really quickly. In fact, with the long tassels on the bottom, it's probably a little too long -- but not to the point where it sweeps the ground behind me. The one real problem is that, without a crochet hook, it was nearly impossible to weave the ends in inconspicuously, but I think of the little bits that stick out at all angles as "character."

Probably because I haven't worn it outside much, this scarf has held up really well. And, considering the complete and total artificiality of its material, that makes sense -- just think of all the perfectly preserved nasty acrylic hats and shawls that one finds in any given thrift shop. This isn't destined for the donation bin any time, though -- I think I'm going to hold onto it for awhile.
