Recycled Silk Scarf

The Official Scarf of the 28th Olympiad.

Materials: One skein Mango Moon recycled silk, approximately 200 grams. Size 13 needles..

Time: Several days of Olympic Competitions on the TiVo.

Cost: $24 (including shipping costs).

I had a new black corduroy trench to wear for fall, but no scarf to go with it. What to do? Use this as an excuse to jump on the recycled sari silk bandwagon and make one!

The yarn is both expensive to produce and popular, so I did some extensive digging on eBay and found some that fit decently within my budget. And I can totally understand why the stuff's so spendy: no, I probably wouldn't make a sweater out of it or anything, but it's crazy silky and vibrant.

Close-up of the yarn.

Despite the irregularities and occasional knots, it was pretty easy to work with, too. After a few trial-and-error sessions, I ended up casing on 22 sts and working in garter stitch until almost out of yarn, slipping the first stitch of every row purlwise for a nice edge. Remaining yarn went to the fat fringes.

Lying down...

Because I have no photographer handy, it's being modeled by my bass.

It even makes garter stitch look exotic.

It's even extra-shiny in natural light. Updates to come about how it wears...

As the bass demonstrates, it does stretch out nicely. Ooh, drape!

This is me loving the recycled silk. I found some for a pretty good price a while ago, and opted to make it into a bag, since it doesn't stretch as much as other yarns (depending on the stitch). I love the scarf, though - so cute!

How long have you been playing bass?
