Bittersweet Socks

I use lots of wool socks here in Wisconsin.

Materials: 2 skeins Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (75% Superwash Wool, 25% Nylon) in Bittersweet; size1 DPNs. My own pattern(s).

Time: 2 months (for both pairs).

Cost: $18 total

The longer pair of socks here came to life as mindless vacation knitting while I was in Chicago this summer: all stockinette, nothing fancy. The majority of the leg before the heel turn on the first sock was made while watching Spider-man 2 in the hotel room. And the guy sitting across the aisle from me on the bus was completely fascinated by my tubular cast on. Knitting: it brings the men.

The first pair of socks.

Once I finished these socks, I realized that I still had a lot of yarn left. And it would really be a shame to waste it, considering the price. And I happen to like wearing short socks. So, I cast on for toe-up socks in a 5x2 rib, crossed my fingers, and knit on to see how far I could get.

What two skeins can get you!

Fortunately, I had juuuust enough yarn to make these ankle-length socks, which makes me happy. I used a no-wrap short-row heel for the first time, too, and it was substantially less fiddly than the usual.
