As mentioned previously, I have been all about the Folk Mittens recently. After my mom’s heavy-handed hints at New Year’s, I ordered a bunch of KnitPicks Yarn that perfectly matches her winter hat and coat to make a pair of Bohus Stickning mittens from Folk Mittens for her birthday in February.
I charged right through the first mitten in about a week of concerted effort and arduous TiVo-watching. What I forgot in all of my enthusiasm, though, was that I don’t actually know how to do multi-strand color work very well, and when I tried to put the mitten on post-finishing I couldn’t actually get my hand through them without tangling my fingers and nails amidst all of the loose strands of yarn strung around the inside of the mitten. And if I couldn’t put the mittens on without five minutes of careful gyration, there was no way that my mom — not the most patient of women, in most circumstances — would do the same. I wasn’t about to knit another present to end up in her bin of unworn gifts, so the mittens were scrapped without enough time to finish them for her birthday.
But my Selbu mittens! The mittens that stole the Super Bowl! They fit like a dream, have none of the finger-catching inside runs of the Bohus Stickning mittens, and look badass (especially whenever I get around to blocking them).
All was going so well… until I got out the first mitten to try it on with its almost-completed mate.
This, my friends, is what happens when you knit during the Super Bowl.
I’m not sure what the end to the mitten saga will be, actually. I just found out that one of my favorite online vendors carries the same color of purple Lamb’s Pride that I’d need to make two more right-hand mittens, so I’ll probably order that plus some other yarny goodies to make myself feel better. The mittens that my mom will be getting next Christmas might not match her coat and hat as well, but they’ll have been hard-won, dammit!
Ohh, ouch.
Just think about all you've learned from this! (Trying to put a positive spin on it.)
The Bohus mitten looks lovely, even if it's unwearable.
Make two and have a matching set?
You're right. They - do - look badass. ;)
