Socks of Great Irony

The best socks I've ever made... that don't fit.

Materials: 2 skeins Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock (75% Superwash Wool, 25% Nylon) in Lucky Stripe; size1 DPNs. Pattern from Knitting on the Road.

Time: A month or two.

Cost: $18

After my first few pairs of toe-up socks, I decided to go for something more elaborate and try the cool-looking Conwy socks in Knitting on the Road. The pattern was extremely well-written and easy to follow, even though I chose to make the socks in the loudest and busiest yarn possible.

Don't they make your eyes hurt?

Because I'm used to self-swatching with toe-up socks, I jumped right in with this pair. Because I'm also pretty non-picky about these things, I didn't bother to try them on as I was knitting them. Consequently, I didn't realize until I'd finished that they're both super-small, and I can barely squeeze my heel into them even after washing and stretching.

Reclining seductively on the grass.

Measurements confirm that I knit Lorna's Laces (which is an awesome yarn) at 9.5 sts/inch, instead of the required 7. Who knew? That would explain the sizing issues and perilously tight fit.

Close-up.

Honestly, though, I put too much time and effort into them to rip them out, so they're going to be a surprise gift for Mom when I go home tomorrow. At least she might get some wear out of them. In the meantime, I've started another pair of socks with Lorna's Laces and another pattern from the same book, because I really like the design details. I am, however, adjusting for my freakishly tight sock gauge this time.
